Vol. 56 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Rabbits.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the export of rabbits from the Irish Free State to Britain fell from 686 tons in 1931 to 51 tons in 1933, and during the same period Australia increased her export of frozen rabbits to Britain from 15,767 tons to 21,782 tons; and seeing that we are in a favourable position to provide practically unlimited supplies of fresh rabbits to this valuable market, if he will consider the advisability of giving an export bounty to help to secure this trade, which would give remunerative occupation to many persons now unemployed and help to rid the country of thousands of pests which are causing grievous damage to growing crops and pastures.

As indicated in my reply to the Deputy on the 8th instant, the matter of giving a bounty on the export of dead rabbits is receiving consideration. I am not yet in a position to add to that reply.

Can the Minister hold out any hope that prompt attention will be given?

Dr. Ryan

I cannot hold out any hope at present.

asked the Minister for Agriculture what is the monthly export quota to Great Britain of (1) pigs and (2) pig products for the next ensuing quota period; and what were these figures for each quota period from the time of the original quota order.

Dr. Ryan

The following is the information required:—

Statement giving particulars of the Monthly Export (Bacon) quota since 1st January, 1934, together with details as to the division of the quota in the categories of bacon, live pigs intended for conversion into bacon, and careases intended for conversion into bacon.
