Vol. 56 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Control of Prices Act.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he intends to introduce legislative proposals to amend the Control of Prices Act, 1932, with a view to effectively preventing profiteering and providing better machinery for dealing with rapid price changes adversely affecting the interests of the consumer.

I am not satisfied that the Control of Prices Act has been ineffective in preventing profiteering, or that the existing machinery for dealing with rapid price changes adversely affecting the interests of the consumer is inadequate. I do not, therefore, propose at the present stage to introduce legislation for the purpose of amending the Act, but I am, of course, prepared to give due consideration to any suggestions which the Deputy, or any other responsible person, may wish to make in the matter.
