Vol. 56 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports and Production of Coal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total amount of coal, etc., to which the Control of Imports (Quota No. 11) Order, 1934, refers for which import licences were issued subsequent to the issue of that Order subject to a condition regarding a specified port of entry; the names of the ports so specified, and the total amount of the coal, etc., imports licensed with specific reference to each such port.

The amount of the coal, culm, shale, or slack falling within the category to which the first part of the question refers is 74,393½ tons. I am sending the Deputy a schedule giving the detailed information asked for in the latter part of the question.

Following is the schedule:—

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the quantity and the value of the total amount of (1) coal; (2) culm; (3) shale, and (4) slack to which the Control of Imports (Quota No. 11) Order, 1934, refers, produced in Saorstát Eireann during the years 1931, 1932, 1933 and 1934; the number of firms engaged in the production in the year 1934; and what, if any, extension of this production is contemplated either by the increase of production by the existing firms or the formation of new producing firms.

The information available in my Department as to coal production in the Saorstát does not distinguish between coal, culm, shale and slack. The quantity and value of coal raised for the four years referred to are as follows:—

There were five firms engaged in the production of coal in the Saorstát in the year 1934. It is anticipated that production by existing firms will increase and the investigation which will shortly be undertaken in the Slieve Ardagh area may result in the opening of an additional deposit.
