Vol. 57 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salmon Mortality at Shannon Works.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the abundance of salmon imprisoned in the Tail Race at Ardnacrusha; and, if so, if he will state if any steps are being taken to avert a repetition of the mortality of these fish of the past two years.

Dr. Ryan

I am aware that, under present conditions of the regulation of the flow of water in the river Shannon, the tail race from the power station at Ardnacrusha offers a strong attraction to ascending salmon to leave the main river.

The Shannon Fisheries Act, 1935, gives the Electricity Supply Board extensive powers for the protection and improvement of the fisheries of the river Shannon, and I am hopeful that the Electricity Supply Board will use these powers to deal with the situation referred to in the question.
