Vol. 58 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killaloe Compensation Claim.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that Mr. John McKeogh's establishment, Lakeside Hotel, Killaloe, was commandeered by British Crown forces from May 14th, 1916, until February 22nd, 1922, and was on the night of the 12th August, 1922, burned to the ground by forces opposed to the Government, to the great loss and damage to the health of Mr. McKeogh and his family; that in 1924 he was awarded a decree for reconstruction, but its payment was held up until 1929; and that in consequence, from August, 1922, to the present time, he has been deprived of his legitimate business, and if it is intended to give any compensation in this case of exceptional hardship.

The major part of the decree granted to Mr. McKeogh in 1924 was subject to a full reinstatement condition and it was not until May, 1929, that his architects furnished the Office of Public Works with complete particulars of his proposals for reinstating the premises. Sanction to the proposals was given on the 22nd June, 1929, and payment was made in instalments from time to time as the work of reinstatement proceeded. The unconditional part of the decree was discharged in October, 1924. It is not possible to make any payment to Mr. McKeogh by way of compensation for loss of business.
