Vol. 58 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Robe Drainage.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amount expended up to July 1st, 1935, by the Commissioners of Public Works on the preparation of the scheme for the drainage of the River Robe.

The total expenditure incurred to the 1st July, 1935, by the Commissioners of Public Works in the investigation of the River Robe drainage scheme is approximately £2,850.

Is the Minister aware that the Congested Districts Board some ten years ago prepared an estimate in connection with the drainage of this river showing that the total cost would be £3,500 and that already the cost of this particular work had come to £2,800?

I am aware that many schemes have been carried out at an estimated cost which was obviously less than was necessary to provide an efficient drainage scheme and that such schemes turned out to be very costly to this State and to the people whose land was to be drained.

If the Minister wants to see the scheme he will find it in the Land Commission, where I have seen it within the last week.
