Vol. 59 No. 1

Céisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Bread.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the master bakers have, within six months, notified three increases in the price of bread, and that on the 14th October a ½d. increase in the 4-lb. loaf was notified; whethe he is aware that the Prices Commission on the 5th August last recommended a reduction in the price of bread, and whether in view of the recommendations made by this Commission he will take steps to see that the increased prices are reversed.

I am aware that the master bakers in the Dublin area have within the past six months notified three increases in the price of bread including an increase of ½d. in the price of the 4-lb. loaf on the 14th instant, but I am not aware that the Prices Commission on the 5th August last recommended a reduction in the price of bread in this area. Having regard to the report of the Commission, it appears that the recent increase in the price of bread in Dublin can be justified in view of fluctuations in the price of flour. I propose in the near future to bring before the Dáil proposals for legislation to deal generally with bread prices.

Is the Minister aware that no baker in the Free State could produce bread, not to say sell it, at the price indicated in the Order of the Commission on Prices of the 5th August at the then price of flour?

I am aware that bakers in the Dublin area were doing so.
