Vol. 59 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral—Answers. - River Robe Drainage.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will now state the cause of the delay in proceeding with the scheme for the drainage of the River Robe.

Following the consideration of the recommendations of the investigator who held the public inquiry in respect of objections received to the River Robe proposed drainage scheme, the Commissioners of Public Works decided to have the proposal re-examined by their engineer.

As a result, it was found necessary to make certain substantial alterations in the scheme, particulars of which are to-day being transmitted to the Mayo County Council. A copy of the letter being issued to the council will be sent to the Deputy and to the other Deputies for the constituency as soon as that letter has been issued to the county council.

Arising out of the reply by the Parliamentary Secretary, I want to ask is he aware that as far back as four years ago the Minister for Industry and Commerce, at a meeting in Mayo, promised the people of Mayo that drainage operations on the River Robe would commence within six months?

If the Deputy really wants this work on the River Robe done he will wait to read the letter which is going out to the County Council, and if he will do that he will avoid the silly nonsense of trying to make party capital out of this River Robe drainage scheme.

A sum of £10,000 was appropriated to that work last spring. Will the Parliamentary Secretary say what he has done with it?

The less the River Robe is used as a platform for self-advertising the better it will be for the Deputies who are using it as a platform for such purposes.
