Vol. 59 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral—Answers. - Transatlantic Air Services.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether it is proposed to select landing places in the Free State in connection with transatlantic air services; and, if so, if he will state what examination has been carried out with a view to appreciating the suitability of Lough Swilly for this purpose, and if he will state if it is proposed to use Lough Swilly in connection with the services.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has considered the manifest advantages of Bantry or Crookhaven as a base for transatlantic air services.

I propose to answer questions Nos. 4 and 11 together. I am not in a position to make any statement in the matter of transatlantic air services. It may be taken that in any consideration of the matter every pertinent factor will be reviewed.

Arising out of the Minister's answer, is he aware that Sir Alan Cobham, one of the greatest authorities on aviation, publicly stated last year that one of the most suitable landing places in the Irish Free State for transatlantic air liners was in Castlebar, where there is an aerodrome which was used by the British Government for years during the Great War?

That is a good way from Lough Swilly.
