Vol. 59 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Plotholders.

asked the Minister for Lands if he has received repeated representations during the past two years from or on behalf of over 60 plotholders on the estate of the Earl of Rosse, Birr, Offaly; whether he is aware that those concerned are being pressed to sign new agreements or threatened with legal proceedings, and if he can now state what action the Land Commission propose to take in this case.

Numerous applications and representations have been received regarding acquisition by the Land Commission of plots let under temporary grazing and conacre agreements to residents of Birr on part of Lord Rosse's demesne adjoining the town. These plots vary generally in extent from one to seven acres. Out of over 50 cases of which particulars are available, as a result of preliminary inquiries made by the Land Commission, it appears that many of the lettings are to shopkeepers, publicans and tradesmen. The matter is still under consideration and inquiries are proceeding.
