Vol. 59 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nenagh River Drainage.

asked the Minister for Finance whether his Department proposes to take any further action regarding the drainage of the Nenagh river; and, if so, if he will state what action it is proposed to take.

As the Deputy was informed on the 3rd April last, the Nenagh river drainage scheme was rejected by the votes of the occupiers of the affected lands, and no further action can be taken by the Commissioners of Public Works unless a fresh petition is presented to them under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the main reason why those people rejected the scheme was because the charge on the lands there varied from 2/6 to 26/- per acre?

The Parliamentary Secretary is fully aware of that, and if the Deputy will look up the discussion on the Relief Vote or the Public Works Vote, on which the Deputy raised that question, he and his constituents will find a full and complete explanation of the matter. The real difficulty is that any further scheme which is presented will entail upon those benefiting from the drainage works the necessity of paying charges approximating to the sum represented by the benefit they are in fact ascertained to have received under the scheme.
