Vol. 59 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Accommodation in Saggart.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that Saggart National School is in a deplorable condition; that rain flows freely through the roof; that in wet weather it is impossible to continue the classes, and that its condition generally inflicts grave hardship on pupils and teachers; whether he is in a position to announce that steps will be taken immediately to provide a suitable school in the neighbourhood, and if he can state when proper school accommodation will be available.

I am aware that the existing Saggart National School building is defective and unsuitable. My Department has sanctioned a grant for the erection of a new schoolhouse in this case. Tenders have been invited and building work will be commenced at an early date.

Meanwhile I am having inquiries made with a view to ascertaining what repairs are needed to render the existing schoolhouse habitable pending the erection of the new school.
