Vol. 60 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bounties on Live Stock.

asked the Minister for Finance if in view of the fact that the bounties hitherto paid on live stock exported to Britain have now ceased he will, in the circumstances, take the necessary steps to have a sum equivalent to the amount paid in bounties during the current financial year earmarked for the relief of rates on agricultural land during the year 1936-37.

The answer is in the negative.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the money saved to the Exchequer as a result of the withdrawal of the bounties consequent on the recent trade agreement with Britain will be utilised to afford direct relief to the agricultural community.

The savings referred to by the Deputy arising on the Vote for Export Bounties and Subsidies will not be considerable in the present financial year, and as regards the coming financial year 1936-37, I would ask the Deputy to await the Budget statement.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is prepared to make available to the county councils for the relief of rates on agricultural lands an amount equal to the sum saved to the Exchequer by the discontinuance of bounties arising out of the agreement recently concluded with Great Britain.

The answer is in the negative.

Is the Minister aware that since the withdrawal of the Agricultural Grant a large number of poor persons are without home assistance? Is he aware that owing to the withdrawal of the Agricultural Grant the county councils are unable to provide the necessary money for relief? Is the Minister also aware that in Wicklow the people do not receive any benefit from beet growing or anything like that?

Have you not a gold mine?
