Vol. 61 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dáil Bonds in United States.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (1) the total amount of the Dáil Bonds raised in the United States of America; (2) the total amount of the moneys so raised lying in the United States on 1st June, 1922; (3) the amount of these moneys spent in legal costs arising out of the Dáil Bonds litigation in the United States; (4) the amount of money remaining for distribution after judgment had been given and the legal expenses had been paid; (5) the amount of these moneys that have since been distributed; and (6) the amount remaining undistributed in the United States; and if he will state in whose hands this latter amount is, and to what purpose any residue that may be left will be put.

The total amount subscribed to the Dáil Eireann External Loans in 1920 and 1921 was, according to the Denominational Registers, $5,746,370. Of this sum $3,438,936.30 had been remitted to the Saorstát before the 1st June, 1922, approximately, leaving a principal sum of $2,307,433.70 in the United States. The addition of dividends and interest brought this up to a sum of $2,879,958.11 at the time of the judgment of the Supreme Court of New York in June, 1927. The court awarded costs payable out of the funds to the aggregate amount of $226,000 and the payment of these costs left $2,653,958.11 to be transferred to the receivers. The total sum with the further dividend and interest earned but less the costs of the receivership was distributed and no sum remains undistributed in the United States. The final query in the Deputy's question does not accordingly arise.
