Statistics for income-tax and surtax purposes are not compiled in such a form as to enable the information, required by the Deputy, to be supplied, so far as the question of the number of persons who paid (1) income-tax and (2) surtax during the financial years referred to is concerned. It would not be possible, furthermore, to attempt to obtain the information asked for without considerable expense, which it would be difficult to justify, and without diverting the staff from its main function, namely, the assessment and collection of the tax. As regards the remainder of the question, the information is contained in the following table:
