Vol. 63 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Sheep Dip Factory.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that a factory for the manufacture of sheep dip and refining of nicotine, which was established at Lismore, County Waterford, about ten years ago, is about to close down owing, it is stated, to the excessive duty chargeable on waste tobacco, which is the raw material most used at the factory, and if he will have inquiries made with a view to granting the proprietor some relief; otherwise the industry, which is capable of absorbing at least 40 men permanently, will be transferred to Belfast in the near future.

No duty has been charged at any time on the waste tobacco received at the Lismore nicotine factory. The question of granting relief from duty does not, therefore, arise.
