Vol. 65 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Movement of Population.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if in view of the fact that the preliminary report on the census of April, 1936, disclosed that the population of the Free State then was 67,000 below the estimate made by the Registrar-General for June, 1935, and that this discrepancy was due to unexpected emigration to Great Britain in the years 1934 and 1935 for the observation of which no adequate machinery existed, he will state whether, with a view more accurately to estimate the population from year to year, he has since made any change in the manner of observing or estimating emigration to Great Britain; and, if so, if he will state what arrangements have been made.

The question of the best method of measuring the net annual migration between the Saorstát and other countries is at present being discussed between my Department and the Department of Local Government and Public Health.
