Vol. 66 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sanitary Conditions of Kilcormac (Offaly).

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware of the nature of the report on the insanitary condition of Kilcormac, made to the Offaly Board of Health by the county medical officer; whether he is aware of the number of deaths due to infectious diseases reported from Kilcormac district in each of the last three years; whether he is aware that there is neither a sewerage system nor water supply in the town of Kilcormac, and if he will state whether it is his intention to take any action in regard to the neglected condition of this district.

The Minister is not aware of the nature of the report referred to in the first part of the question.

As regards the second part, the deaths due to infectious diseases in the Kilcormac dispensary district are not classified separately by the Registrar General, but the number of cases of infectious disease notified from that district in each of the last three years for which the information is available are as follows:—

1933—Nil.

1934—Typhoid fever, 1;

Diphtheria, 2;

Encephalitis Lethargica, 1.

1935—Diphtheria or suspected diphtheria, 7.

As regards the latter part of the question, it is understood that the water supply for this district is derived from three pumps, and that there are a few built drains for sewerage and surface water.

The question of the improvement of the water supply and sewerage system is one primarily for the Offaly Board of Health and Public Assistance acting on the advice of the county medical officer of health, who has been asked to draw up a list of the necessary sanitary works for the county health district in order of urgency.
