Vol. 66 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware of the state of congestion amongst small holders on the W.G. Murphy estate, Stonefield; the Carter estate, Curraunboy, and the Carson estate, Muingnabo, all in the County of Mayo; whether his attention has been directed to the deplorable condition of several of the dwellinghouses and out-offices occupied by tenants on these estates; whether his attention has been directed to the absence of accommodation roads and the necessity for enlarging the uneconomic holdings on the estates; and whether he is in a position to state when the Land Commission propose taking over the estates in question for the purpose of improving and dividing them amongst the occupiers of congested holdings.

Mr. Boland

The question appears to refer to the estates of W.G. Murphy, Record No. S. 5423; W.H.W. Carson, Record No. S.6922; and V. A. T. Shaen Carter, Record No. S.1879, all of which have been vested in the Land Commission under Section 9 of the Land Act, 1931. Arrangements will be made as soon as possible for the inspection of the Murphy and Carson estates with a view to carrying out a rearrangement of the holdings and any other necessary improvements. As regards the Shaen Carter estate, all the holdings comprising the tenanted portion thereof have been retained for rearrangement. The work of examining this large estate with a view to rearrangement is being taken in hands in six sections, and questions of road accommodation, housing and other requisite improvements will be duly considered.
