Vol. 66 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Flour.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total quantity (in 280lb. sacks) of flour imported into the Irish Free State during the year 1936; (1) has such flour been imported on licences issued by the Minister, and to how many firms were such licences issued; (2) what were the highest and lowest prices c.i.f. of such flour, during the period, paid by the importers; and (3) what were the corresponding prices charged by the importers to bakers or retailers.

The total quantity of flour imported into the Saorstát during the year 1936 was 55,763 sacks of 280 lb. and the c.i.f. value was £74,816. This flour has been imported under licences issued by me, and they were issued to only two firms for the purpose of biscuit manufacture. As the flour in question was not re-sold either to bakers or retailers, the question of the price paid by the importers in respect of individual consignments and the question of the corresponding price charged by the importers to bakers or retailers do not arise.
