asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the number of sub-postmasters in receipt of salaries not exceeding (a) £20 per annum, (b) £40 per annum, (c) £60 per annum, (d) £80 per annum (e) £100 per annum, (f) £120 per annum (g) £140 per annum, (h) £160 per annum, (i) £180 per annum, (j) £200 per annum, and (k) over £200 per annum; further, whether he will state whether the sub-postmasters are required to provide office accommodation and office requisites out of the remuneration mentioned in each case, and whether he will indicate the nature of the requisites required to be provided.

The answer is in the form of a tabular statement which will be circulated to the Deputy and inserted in the Official Report.

A Sub-Postmaster is required to provide from his own resources accommodation in relation to the importance of the Office, and it usually consists of a counter, counterdrawers and till, a locker for registered items, a cupboard or drawers for forms, etc., a clock, and if the business warrants it, a cash-box or safe. He is also required to supply and fix a notice-board showing the name of the Post Office and to provide the necessary facilities (pen, ink, etc.), to the public to complete documents at the Office.
