Vol. 69 No. 20

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labour Exchange in Howth.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if representations have been made to him by the Howth Urban Council to establish a labour exchange in Howth; and if, in view of the large amount of municipal and Government schemes being carried out in the area, as well as housing schemes partly subsidised by Government grant, he is prepared to examine favourably the position to facilitate the workers and employers of Howth, Sutton, Portmarnock, Baldoyle and Raheny.

Representations for the establishment of an employment exchange in Howth have been received from the Howth Urban District Council and the matter has had full consideration, but it has been decided that the expenditure involved in the opening of such an office in the district would not be justified.

The existing procedure makes it unnecessary for the representatives of local authorities or for other employers to attend personally at an employment exchange in connection with the recruitment of labour. All business relating to the notification of vacancies and the submission of applicants for work can continue to be done as at present through the post. Similarly workpeople residing over six miles from the nearest local office who desire to register for employment or to claim unemployment assistance or unemployment benefit may continue to do so through the post, as they do now, without personally attending at the office.
