Vol. 73 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labourers' Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he received from the Kildare Board of Health a draft scheme for the sale of labourers' cottages to the occupiers; and, if so, whether he will state what were the proposals set out in the scheme, and if he has approved or intends to approve the scheme.

No draft scheme was received by me from the Kildare Board of Health and Public Assistance. A scheme made by the board in September, 1937, was submitted but had to be remade owing to errors made therein. The board remade the scheme on 16th May, 1938, providing for the purchase of 1,882 labourers' cottages in the county health district by means of the monthly payments of annuities equivalent to 75 per cent. of existing rents, exclusive of rates, terminable on the expiration of payment periods dependent on the dates of erection of the cottages. The scheme was approved by me without modification on the 16th July, 1938, and laid on the Table of the House on 25th October, 1938.

Would the Minister say whether the first scheme submitted by the board provided for the sale of the cottages by payment of an annuity of 50 per cent. of the present rents, and was it intimated to the board that a proposal to that effect would not be sanctioned?

That is correct.

It was intimated to the board that they would not be allowed to sell at 50 per cent.?

That is correct.
