Vol. 74 No. 5

Committee on Finance. - Vote 22—Stationery and Printing.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim Bhreise ná raghaidh thar £4,050 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1939, chun Tuarastail agus Costaisí Oifig an tSoláthair; chun Páipéarachais, Clódóireachta, Páipéir, Greamuíochta agus Leabhra Clóbhuailte i gcóir na Seirbhíse Puiblí; agus chun Ilsheirbhísí Ilghnéitheacha maraon le Tuairiscí Díospóireachtaí an Oireachtais.

That a Supplementary sum not exceeding £4,050 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1939, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Stationery Office; for Stationery, Printing, Paper, Binding, and Printed Books, for the Public Service; and for sundry Miscellaneous Services, including Reports of Oireachtas Debates.

As will be seen from the face of the Estimate, this amount arises under various sub-heads, including that of grants to newspapers and periodicals published in Irish or publishing current news in Irish. So far as that sub-head is concerned, the additional amount now asked for arises out of a decision to subsidise a fortnightly paper called Eire Og, to be published by the Christian Brothers and issued in conjunction with the publication, Our Boys. The subsidy will be to the extent of £30 per issue, with a possible maximum of £800 in a full year. There is an offset to the increased cost under that sub-head, due to smaller payments than were anticipated in respect of subsidies to other periodicals publishing news in Irish. Under sub-head H, £500 additional is required to meet increased demands for various items of printing from Government Departments generally. Under sub-head I, an additional sum of £6,000 is required for paper. There has been a very marked increase in the purchase price of paper in the present financial year. An increase was anticipated, but it has proved larger than was originally estimated.

Is this due to a world increase?

I believe there has been a world increase in the price of paper.

If you believe that you are sadly deluded.

Vote agreed to.
