Vol. 74 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Promotion of Postmen.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the cause of the delay in announcing a decision on the representations which have been made to him to hold an examination confined to postmen, grades "A" and "B," for the purpose of filling vacancies in the post office clerk grade at Dublin.

The proposals for the holding of a limited competition confined to postmen, for posts as post office clerk, grade "B," in Dublin, have involved a comprehensive review of the system of open and limited recruitment.

The matter has now reached an advanced stage, but I am not in a position at the moment to say when a decision will be reached.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he aware that he stated in this House on 26th October last that it was hoped to reach a decision at an early date? That is five months ago. If the term "an early date" means anything it surely means something within five months, but instead of being able to indicate a date now the Minister seems further away than ever from being able to do so.

We are not unduly delaying the investigations.

You are not unduly perspiring in coming to a decision either.

Why should they?
