Vol. 76 No. 17

Questions— Written Answers. - Laundry Machinery.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of firms engaged in the assembly of laundry machinery, the number of persons solely employed in this work, and if not solely so employed, the number of additional employees taken on since the duty was first imposed.

There are six firms assembling laundry machinery. A number of these firms are engaged in the manufacture or assembly of other articles, and the workers are not employed solely in the assembly of laundry machines. Separate employment figures are not available in respect of the assembly of laundry machines by these firms. It is not possible, therefore, to state the number of persons employed solely in this work at present, nor the number of additional employees who have been taken on since the duty was originally imposed.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state for each of the years 1935, 1936, 1937 and 1938 the amount received from import duties on laundry machinery imported either assembled or in parts.

The duty on laundry machinery imposed by the Emergency Imposition of Duties (No. 111) Order, 1936, took effect as from 31st October, 1936, inclusive. The amounts received in duty thereunder in the calendar years 1936, 1937 and 1938 are as follows—

1936

£166

1937

£1,399

1938

£1,110
