Vol. 77 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Eggs.

Mr. Brennan

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that in fixing the price for fresh eggs the British Ministry of Food have fixed the wholesale and retail price of fresh eggs from Éire substantially lower than the price for similar eggs from Northern Ireland, the fixed retail price for eggs whose minimum weight is 15 lbs. per 120 eggs being 2/6 per dozen for Northern Ireland eggs, and only 1/9 per dozen for Éire eggs, and in the case of eggs of minimum weight 12 lbs. per 120 eggs, the fixed retail price being 2/- per dozen for Northern Ireland eggs and only 1/6 per dozen for Éire eggs; and if he will state whether any representations have been made to the British Ministry of Food that Éire eggs should be placed on a price equality with Northern Ireland eggs.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. Representations on the subject referred to in the second part of the question have already been made to the British Food Control Department. The negotiations with a view to an increase being obtained in the price for Irish eggs are still in progress.
