Vol. 77 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transference of Irish Funds to Holland.

asked the Minister for Finance whether it is with the knowledge and consent of the Government that the Irish banks have declined to permit citizens to transfer funds to Holland for the purpose of regular trading operations except with the consent of the Bank of England and, if not, whether he is prepared to take such steps as are necessary to ensure that citizens who desire to trade with foreign countries will be given the currency facilities to enable them to do so.

I have no knowledge that currency facilities have been refused in the case of normal trading operations between this country and Holland which, subject to any difficulties in the matter of transport which may have arisen, are being carried on as usual, or that the Bank of England has attempted to hinder such operations. The second part of the question does not, accordingly, arise.

Arising out of the Minister's reply I want to ask will he, if particulars are furnished to him of the difficulties that have arisen, take action to ensure that normal trading facilities will be given in this matter?

I will look into any particulars the Deputy may furnish.

Is any such transfer possible without the assistance of the Bank of England?

When Deputy Norton sends the particulars he referred to I will have the matter looked into.
