Vol. 77 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Army Reservists.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that a number of men who were regular campaign workers in the Carlow sugar factory were recently discharged from military training a few days too late for employment in this year's campaign; and whether in view of the amount of State capital invested in the sugar company, he will make representations to the management with a view to the employment of the men.

The men referred to by the Deputy were released as expeditiously as was possible in the circumstances. I have taken steps to convey to employers generally the Government's wish that reservists should not be penalised in the present emergency by reason of their Army commitments and, where a specific case of loss of employment consequential on Army service is brought to my notice, I am prepared to make representations in the matter to the employer concerned.
