Vol. 78 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Meals in Dublin.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state whether the Dublin Corporation School Meals Committee have applied for sanction to extend their operations to a number of schools in Dublin and district; and, if so, if he will state the cause of delay in giving sanction to such valuable work, and if he will speed up consideration of the applications now in his Department.

The reply to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, approval has been given to the corporation's proposal to extend school meals to certain schools within the city. The proposal of the corporation also related to the provision of meals in a school situate outside the city, but in that case the corporation's law agent advised them that there is no statutory power to provide school meals.

Would the Minister provide the power?

The Minister has no statutory power.

Mr. A. Byrne

Will the Minister amend the law, so as to give statutory power to the corporation to provide school meals in outside areas where they are required?

That matter is being considered at the moment.
