Vol. 79 No. 10

Vote 40—Charitable Donations and Bequests.

Mr. Boland

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £2,102 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1941, chun Tuarastail agus Costaisí Oifig na dTabhartas agus na dTiomanta Déirciúla (7 agus 8 Vict., c. 97, a. 7 agus 8; 30 agus 31 Vict., c. 54, a. 24; agus 34 agus 35 Vict., c. 102).

That a sum not exceeding £2,102 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1941, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Charitable Donations and Bequests Office (7 and 8 Vict., c. 97, ss. 7 and 8; 30 and 31 Vict c. 54, s. 24; and 34 and 35 Vict., c. 102).

I should like to ask the Minister if any attention has been given towards altering the legislation regarding charitable donations and bequests. Some peculiar anomalies have arisen. Some have remained since the Penal Laws were in operation in the country. I think it is time that the Department of Justice should look into the matter.

Mr. Boland

I am not in a position to answer the Deputy's question. The Deputy is really advocating legislation.

Is the Minister aware that hardships and anomalies have arisen, due to the peculiar circumstances that exist?

Mr. Boland

I am not aware. If the Deputy has any case in mind, he might let me know about it.

Deputy MacEoin may not be aware that what he is doing is trying to wipe out a fruitful source of litigation.

Question put and agreed to.
Progress reported; the Committee to sit again to-morrow.
The Dáil adjourned at 8.20 p.m. to Thursday, 11th April, 1940, at 3 p.m.
