Vol. 79 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport Charges in Dublin.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the high cost of transport in Dublin, he has made, or proposes to make, representations to the Dublin United Tramways Company to introduce arrangements whereby persons resident some distance from the centre of Dublin may obtain season tickets at reduced fares, and if such representations have been made, whether he will indicate how the matter now stands.

The Deputy will appreciate that without the fullest investigation I could not accept the implication in his question that, in present circumstances, the cost of transport in Dublin is unduly high as compared with other cities of like size where similar problems have to be faced. I understand that the Dublin United Tramways Company issue season tickets on their omnibus services where the conditions make it economically practicable to do so.

Is the Minister not aware of the fact that the cost of transport is higher in the City of Dublin than any place else in these islands, and does he not propose to suggest to the Dublin United Tramways Company, which has secured a relatively uncontrolled monopoly of transport in Dublin, that it is desirable, having regard to the high cost of transport, that season tickets should be issued so as to reduce the cost of transport?

I have nothing to add to the reply I have given the Deputy.
