Vol. 80 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Vegetables.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the recent heavy exportation of vegetables, which has resulted in a price being demanded for vegetables for home consumption which many persons cannot afford to pay; and, if so, if he will take steps to control the export of vegetables so as to ensure for home consumption a sufficient supply at reasonable prices.

I am aware that exports of fresh vegetables, such as cabbage, in recent months have been considerably greater than in the corresponding months of previous years and that prices of these vegetables on the home market have been much higher than in other years. The advance in prices has not been due solely to the increase in the volume of exports. Supplies coming on the market have so far been much below normal on account of the exceptionally severe weather experienced during the past winter and of the slow growth in the early months of this year. It is anticipated, however, that larger supplies will be forthcoming in the course of the next few weeks and that prices will then show a downward tendency. I do not think the circumstances are such as to warrant the taking of action with a view to restricting exports.
