Vol. 80 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers in Reformatory and Industrial Schools.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is now in a position to state that the recommendations of the Cussen Commission relating to the appointment of teachers of literary subjects in reformatory and industrial schools will be implemented, and, if so, whether he will indicate the approximate date at which the recommendations will become operative.

I regret that, in the existing circumstances, I am unable to take the necessary steps to implement the recommendations referred to.

Is there any chance that this matter will be reconsidered, in view of the fact that many of those teachers are qualified trained teachers who have been working for a number of years for very small salaries? They have responsibilities as well as other people who are married. Taking all these things into consideration, would the Taoiseach say whether there is any chance of this being reconsidered in the near future?

I think the position is one that bears altogether at present on the financial side.
