Vol. 81 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Eggs.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will negotiate with the British to equalise the prices paid in Great Britain for Irish eggs with that paid for eggs of equal quality produced in Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

The question of equalisation of prices paid in Great Britain for Irish eggs and eggs produced in Northern Ireland and Great Britain has been discussed on several occasions with the British authorities concerned, and will be raised again in future negotiations.

Will the Minister tell the British Minister concerned either to equalise that price by one means or another or let us send no eggs from this country except those which are smuggled across the Northern Border? Hundreds of thousands go in this way and as far as I can help in the smuggling I shall do so. It is not racketeering: it is normal activity, and the more it is done the better pleased am I.
