Vol. 81 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Air Raid Protection for Dublin Institutions.

Mr. A. Byrne

asked the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defensive Measures if under Section 35 or any other section of the Air Raid Precautions Act, 1939, the Dublin Corporation will receive a Government grant towards the air raid protection of the Dublin Union, Grangegorman Mental Home, and Cork Street Fever Hospital; and if, further, he is aware that these bodies, being bodies subsidiary to the Dublin Corporation, will, in the event of no grant being given, make a demand for payment which will fall largely on the Dublin ratepayers.

The Dublin Corporation will not receive a Government grant under the Air Raid Precautions Act, 1939, towards the cost of air raid precautions in the Dublin Union, Grangegorman Mental Hospital, and Cork Street Fever Hospital. I am aware that the funds of the bodies administering these institutions are contributed to by the Dublin Corporation. The administering bodies of these institutions are not, however, local authorities within the meaning of Section 3 of the aforesaid Act and are not eligible for a grant under Section 35, or any other section.

Mr. A. Byrne

That means that the full cost of the A.R.P. for those three institutions will fall on the Dublin ratepayers.
