Vol. 81 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Uneconomic Landholders in South Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the acute congestion that exists among uneconomic landholders in South Mayo, if he is further aware that many large landholders in County Meath and adjoining counties have been prosecuted for failure to till their lands under the Compulsory Tillage Order; and whether he is prepared to have these latter lands resumed for the relief of congestion in areas like South Mayo so that agricultural production may be increased.

The Land Commission are doing everything possible, within their limited resources, to relieve congestion in South Mayo and elsewhere by migration or otherwise, but it should be realised that in the present emergency conditions it is not feasible to undertake many new commitments.

If the Deputy will recall what I said in winding up the debate on the Estimate for Lands on the 16th of last May, on the importance of relieving congestion in the west by migration to the midlands, he will be reassured that this matter is not being neglected.
