Vol. 81 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployed Secondary Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of male secondary school teachers at present unemployed.

I am unable to state the number of male secondary school teachers at present unemployed. The records of the Department show that the number of such teachers in employment has been increasing annually. The Department has, however, no information regarding the number of persons who obtain university qualifications with a view to taking up the profession of secondary teaching, and I am, therefore, not in a position to say to what extent, if any, the supply of such teachers exceeds the demand. The following figures give the numbers of men secondary teachers in employment in recent years:—1934/35—1,375; 1935/36—1,401; 1936/37—1,417; 1937/38 —1,447; 1938/39—1,476.
