Vol. 82 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies from United States.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if, in view of the fact that the United States Government are sending supplies of wheat and foodstuffs to Spain and to that part of France under the control of the Vichy Government, he will make immediate and urgent representations to the United States Government to remove the restrictions on United States shipping to this country.

Representations in the sense suggested by the Deputy were made at an early stage of the war but were not successful.

We have, however, made offers to purchase United States vessels and we have asked the appropriate United States authorities for assistance in obtaining the necessary licences.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, he states that representations were made early in the war but were not successful. Were the same representations repeated since?

We have pursued the other course, which I think much more suitable.

Will the Taoiseach say whether any preliminary replies were received?

I cannot give the Deputy information on that yet.
