Vol. 83 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coast Life-Saving Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will now consider making an increase in the allowances to members of the coast life-saving service whose work has been greatly increased owing to the war, and many of whom are almost entirely dependent on the remuneration they receive as coast watchers.

The allowances to the coast life-saving service volunteers for attendances on duty are paid at rates per attendance, and therefore automatically provide for any increase in the number of such attendances. In the question there is an apparent confusion of the coast life-saving service, which is voluntary and part-time, with the full-time coast watching service recruited by the Department of Defence.

I would refer the Deputy to the answer I gave to a question by Deputy Morrissey on the 10th April, 1940, bearing on the remuneration of the coast life-saving service.
