Vol. 85 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sugar for Confectionery.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he will increase the allocation of sugar to confectionery manufacturers so as to ensure maintenance of employment in this industry and increased consumption of sugar by the juveniles who normally consume the bulk of manufactured confectionery.

Following representations made to me some time ago I decided that, as from the 1st November; 1941, the deliveries of sugar to all manufacturers, including confectionery manufacturers, should be increased to a rate equal to 100 per cent. of that at which deliveries were made during the year 1940. Effect has already been given to this decision in a number of cases and the necessary administrative arrangements to apply it generally are being made.

Has the Minister adverted to the fact that whereas 100 per cent. delivery of sugar is being made, the reduction in the supplies of glucose, which confectionery manufacturers use to a large extent, is considerable? Would it be possible to increase the sugar allocation to confectionery manufacturers to make up in part, at least, the glucose deficiency inasmuch as the present ration of 1-lb. per head per week to retail customers could be reduced without imposing any hardship on the community as a whole?

The Deputy had better give me notice of that question. There was some action taken in relation to glucose, but I do not want to rely on my memory in dealing with it now.

Will the Minister say if the question of increasing the allowance will be considered?

It has been considered. If the Deputy puts down a question I will let him know what has been done.
