Vol. 85 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he will say what is the cause of the delay in subdividing the farm of land at Kiltullagh, Oranmore, County Galway, acquired by the Irish Land Commission from George Miller; whether he is aware that chronic congestion exists in the adjacent village of Kiltullagh in which 19 families endeavour to exist on patches of land not bigger than cabbage gardens, and whether, in view of the imperative need for increasing the acreage under tillage next season, he will take steps to secure that the Irish Land Commission will make this farm available for tillage to the local smallholders who are willing to cultivate it.

Having regard to the present emergency and the shortage of staff, there has been no avoidable delay in the division of the lands of Kiltullagh on the estate of George Miller. The Land Commission are aware of the congestion existing in the village of Kiltullagh and are taking steps to expedite the division of these lands.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that in the village of Kiltullagh, Oranmore, County Galway, there is an instance of acute rural congestion and overcrowding; that adjacent to the village there is an untenanted farm of 120 Irish acres of land the property of Patrick and Martin Conroy, both of whom reside on another large farm; whether he will say why this farm has not been acquired and subdivided amongst the smallholders who have been promised for more than a generation that land will be made available to enlarge their holdings.

The Land Commission have instituted proceedings for the acquisition of the lands of Kiltullagh on the estate of Martin and Patrick Conroy, but the owners have objected to acquisition, and their objection is pending before the Land Commission.
