Vol. 86 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Distribution of Supplies.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Supplies if he has received a memorial signed by over 200 tenants of Keogh Square complaining of their failure to secure a reasonable supply of bread and butter in their district, and if he has received a number of letters from residents all over the city complaining that they cannot secure the full supply of rationed tea and sugar, and that bread and butter are not fairly allocated; and if he will state the result of inquiries into the complaints, and the proposals he is making to ease the situation.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative, and the complaint is being specially investigated.

Complaints from Dublin residents regarding bread supplies are investigated at the earliest practicable moment by outdoor officers of my Department, and in any case in which the complaint is justified the necessary remedial measures are taken. The number of such complaints received, however, is comparatively small in relation to the population of the city.

Since the introduction of the tea and sugar rationing schemes representations have been made by some Dublin City householders that they experienced difficulty in obtaining regularly the maximum tea or sugar ration. In cases where the representations were found to be justified measures were taken to adjust the difficulties.

The Deputy is no doubt aware of the position in regard to butter supplies, as the Minister for Agriculture, within whose province it falls, has recently dealt fully with this matter.
