Vol. 87 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pensions.

asked the Minister for Finance whether old age pensions granted to persons resident in Éire can be paid to them in the event of their transferring residence to Great Britain.

The general rule is that an old age pension granted in Éire may not be paid if the pensioner transfers residence to Great Britain. The only exception is in the case of a widow who becomes entitled to an old age pension under the provisions of Section 75 of the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Act, 1935, as amended.

Will the Minister say whether it is not possible to make an exception in the case of friendless old age pensioners who desire to go to the Six Counties or Great Britain to join members of their families?

If there was any likelihood of reciprocity it could be considered.

I think if the Minister examines the matter he will find there is reciprocity, that old age pensioners in Great Britain, who are not entitled to an old age pension at 65, can receive the old age pension if resident here.

For contributory old age pensions, I understand that is the arrangement.

Old age pensions are not contributory in Great Britain; widows' and orphans' pensions are contributory.

The old age pension is given at 65 and it is contributory.

It is contributory for widows' and orphans' pensions.
