Vol. 87 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grading of Turf.

asked the Minister for Finance if any steps are being taken to have all turf produced during the coming year graded at the bogs, so as to ensure supplies of good turf for industrial purposes and to avoid the transport of inferior turf over long distances.

The method of supervision of the quality of turf going into transport is founded upon spot checks at the point of initiation of traffic and complete check at destination and the co-ordination of these two in tracing back any defective fuel to its source and cause.

Might I point out to the Parliamentary Secretary that, while it would not be possible last year to give effect to any satisfactory method of grading, now with the experience which has been gained by the county surveyors it should be possible to grade the turf on the bogs and thus avoid the transport of inferior turf?

The Deputy can take it that every care is being taken and every interest is in that direction as and when it is possible.
