Vol. 87 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Refund of Motor Tax.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will say why only two days' notice in which to make application for a refund of motor tax was given to persons intending to surrender their road tax licences; whether he is aware that this notice expired on May 2nd, and that, due to its inadequacy, large numbers of persons desiring to surrender their licences were late in making application for a refund of motor tax; and whether, in view of these facts he will take steps to prolong the period for making application for the refund of motor tax so as to cover the cases of all persons who made application in May.

The decision to make refunds of motor licence duty was announced on the radio on the 24th April, 1942, and published in the daily Press on the 25th and 27th April, 1942. The latest date for making application was 2nd May, 1942. It has since been decided, and the local taxation officers have been informed, that in the case of private cars and motor cycles in respect of which permits have not been granted by the Minister for Supplies under the Emergency Powers (Mechanically Propelled Vehicles) Order, 1942, applications for refunds made in the month of May or June will be considered.
