Vol. 87 No. 9

Written Answer. - Congestion on Mayo Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that acute congestion exists on the Fitzgerald estate, Drumganagh, Manulla, County Mayo, where there are a large number of tenants whose poor law valuations are under £5 each, whose lands are situated along the mountain sides, some in 13 divisions and over two miles apart; and if he will state what steps, if any, are being taken by the Land Commission to provide economic holdings for those tenants.

The Land Commission are aware of the congestion on the Congested Districts Board (Fitzgerald) estate and propose to migrate a number of the tenants under the Group Migration Scheme when suitable alternative lands can be made available. Already three tenants on this estate have been migrated under the group scheme, making available some 60 acres for the relief of congests, and a further holding of 19 acres has been secured by the individual migration of another tenant.

A large number of holdings on the Fitzgerald estate are scattered in patches and a comprehensive scheme of rearrangement will be required in order to utilise to the best advantage the vacated holdings of the migrants.
