Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Production.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the number of men in Government service, e.g., members (a) of the Army, and (b) members of the Construction Corps, engaged on (1) the production of turf; and (2) work ancillary to the production of turf, and, further, whether he will state the total quantity of turf in tons on the basis of 30 per cent. moisture content he anticipates will be produced by these men during the 1942 season.

The average number of members of the Army and the Construction Corps engaged or to be engaged on the production of turf during the 1942 season is estimated at 5,270 as follows:—

Army personnel, 4,500; Construction Corps personnel, 770.

The average number of members of the Construction Corps engaged or to be engaged on works ancillary to the production of turf is estimated at 400. No Army personnel is engaged on such work.

The total quantity of turf on the basis of 30 per cent. moisture content which it is anticipated will be produced by Army and Construction Corps personnel during the 1942 season is 53,000 tons.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the anticipated expenditure for which the State will be liable in the present season in respect of royalties arising out of the turf produced by members of (a) the Army, and (b) the Construction Corps.

The expenditure for which it is anticipated that the State will be liable in the present season, arising out of the production of turf by the Army and the Construction Corps, will be approximately £700.
