Vol. 88 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Petrol Allowance.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware that the allowance of 32 gallons per month afforded to 20 h.p. hackney cars permits of a mileage of 576 miles, while 14 gallons to a 10 h.p. hackney car permits only of 350 miles; and whether he will take steps to rectify this anomaly, with special reference to the fact that the 20 h.p. car is capable of carrying more passengers than the 10 h.p. car.

The amended scale of allowances issued in respect of taxis and hire cars as from the beginning of the current month was arrived at after consultation with representatives of the interests affected. In the circumstances, I am not prepared to accept the figures given by the Deputy as a basis for reconsideration of this question.

If it should appear that effective representations can be made to the Minister for Supplies to support the contention that there is this discrepancy between the high-powered car and the low-powered car, will he consider such representations?

I am sure that the Minister will always consider any reasonable representations that are made to him.
