Vol. 88 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Control of Grain Crops.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he intends to keep control of the produce of the wheat, barley and oáts crops this season, so that the maximum amounts will be available for human food at fixed prices; and if he intends to introduce before the recess proposals for legislation to effect such control.

Fixed prices for wheat, barley and oats of this year's harvest have already been announced. I do not consider that it will be necessary to impose any restrictions on the distribution of oats in the coming season but the disposal of the produce of the wheat and barley crops will be subject to control, and the legislation required to supplement the provisions of existing enactments will be embodied in an Order to be made under the Emergency Powers Act, 1939.

Does the Minister intend to continue the operations of the Cereals Distribution Committee next year?

Does that mean that their work was not successful?

It was very successful.

Why are they being dropped?

Because it is not necessary to have the committee.

The Minister thinks that control will not be necessary?

Control of oats will not be necessary, and that was their big function.
